Come and see the first fire truck that was once used when we were just a village. The Display also features uniforms worn by volunteer firemen Ernie Benchell and Paul Volpe. At one time our fire department had only one full time employee, Leonard "Bud" Billings. In 1974, a full department was developed. Volunteers continued to help until 1997.
I remember as a child seeing my Dad's boots in ready position by the back door of our house. We had a special phone line with a unique ring that indicated that there was a fire. My Dad, Peter Leone would race to drive the fire truck. Mr. Volpe got there first many times. The fire station was located on the corner of Richmond and Fairmount Blvd.
Special thank you to our Chief Patrick Kearns who also has added historical pictures and important equipment used by the firemen.
Next time you are at City Hall, stop by to view the Beachwood Historical Society's Display.
