On June 27, 2026, Beachwood Historical Society kicked off the birthday celebration for America by presenting Heroes Who Shaped America. Famous American Heroes Ben Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, Madam CJ Walker, Inez Milholland, Clarence Darrow, Pres. Grant, Eleanor Roosevelt and Ruth Bader Ginsburg are just a few of the special guests that made a visit that evening. The actors were Beachwood residents that dressed up and became the Heroes. We learned so many things from their presentations. Did you know that Mark Twain is the one who took in to his home and helped President Grant (aka Dr. George Vourlojianis) write his memoir when he was sick with cancer and had run out of his money. Eleanor Roosevelt (aka Brenda Crawford) taught us “our obligation to the world is primarily an obligation to our future. You are a citizen and a citizen carries responsibilities.” Clarence Darrow (aka Steve Morse), famous lawyer from Ohio is known for the Scopes Trial but is also known for defending Labor Unions and Workers’ Rights.
Did you know that Paul Revere was not alone on his midnight ride? Meet Sybil Ludington who was only 16 years old riding through the forest to warn that the British were coming. Sybil (aka Gianna Kraus) shared about her dangerous ride that made her a revolutionary war heroine. The Wright Brothers (aka Michael and Jullan Kraus) introduced their sister Katharine (aka Gina DeMart Kraus) who also helped with the first flights. Thanks to Katharine for nursing her brothers back to health after their many crashes. Inez Milholland (aka Ellen Winer), marched in the parade for women suffragists on a horse. Her final words were “Mr. President, when will you give women the right to vote?” She was not only a woman suffragist but a peace activist.
Ruth B. Ginsburg (aka Harriet Siebert)walked into the room wearing her lace collared Judge Robe and captured our attention with the gavel as she shared about her life as a Supreme Court Justice. Madam CJ Walker (aka Beachwood School Board Vice Pres., Kim Allamby) taught us about the first self made millionaire woman. According to Madam, “If I have accomplished anything in life it is because I have been willing to work hard. These are powerful words from Madam that apply to us even today.
State Representative, District 21, Eric Synenberg became Alexander Hamilton. He sang along with the famous rap and shared about how he is known for designing the states’ way of organizing money, which we now call a bank. Regional Outreach Coordinator, Michael Brennan shared all about Ben Franklin’s inventions like bifocals, lightning rods and stoves. He never took a penny for his inventions. He wanted to help others. Michael Brennan also shared how to visit the America 250- Ohio site to learn more about the full year packed with events going on to commemorate our country’s birthday.
